Cardiovascular Disease Screening

Aboyne Medical Practice is taking part in the national programme to identify patients at higher risk of cardiovascular disease.  GPs to tackle hidden risks of heart disease

Cardiovascular disease (coronary heart disease, strokes, peripheral vascular disease etc) is the second largest cause of overall disease burden in our country, and the second most common cause of death after cancer. It causes more than 25% of all deaths in Scotland, many of which are in the under 75 years category and considered avoidable deaths. This means that they are preventable or treatable through public health interventions or timely and effective healthcare. Risk factors for cardiovascular disease include diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity and smoking. There are risk factors that can potentially be identified and treated.

To address this issue, Scottish Government have commenced a national CVD Risk Factors Programme. Their aim is to reduce avoidable CVD deaths by 20% in 20 years.

Who is eligible?

You may be eligible to take part in the programme if you are:

  • aged between 35-60 and
  • have not received a full bundle of checks in the last 3 years

What happens?

You will receive a text and will be asked to make and attend an appointment with our Health Care Assistant for the following measurements and tests:

  • height and weight to calculate your BMI
  • waist measurement
  • Blood pressure
  • Blood tests for diabetes and cholesterol

We will then ask you to make an appointment with a doctor to discuss the results when we have them.

Breast Screening - over the coming weeks, women between the ages of 50 and 70 in this area will receive an invitation for breast screening.  Your invitation will arrive in the post with details of your appointment.  In this age group, regular sceening (every three years) is the best way to detect early breast cancer at an early stage, when treatment is most effective.

Women over the age of 70 will be sent a routine invitation, but are welcome to make an appointment by contacting their local screening centre.

Dear Patients of the Aboyne Medical Practice,

We have been in touch with Mr Bowie and have asked him to correct the assertion in the leaflet about our practice and we hope to hear from him soon.

Please do not be concerned we are here caring for our patients just as we have always been.

Mirena Coil: License extended from 5 years to 8 years for contraception

The Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health CEU statement notes that the Mirena® 52mg LNG-IUD has now been licensed for 8 years for contraception. There has not been an extension to the licensed duration of use when being used for the management of heavy menstrual bleeding, or for endometrial protection as part of hormone replacement therapy (this still requires a change at 5 years).

This applies to mirena coils only, not other types of contraception.

example: a mirena coil inserted in January 2020 can continue to provide contraception till January 2028.
