Dear Patients of the Aboyne Medical Practice,

Many of you have been in touch with us over the last day or so regarding a campaign leaflet which you have received from Andrew Bowie MP and we just wanted to reassure you all that there is absolutely NO suggestion that our practice is at risk of closure. We have been in touch with Mr Bowie and have asked him to correct the assertion in the leaflet about our practice and we hope to hear from him soon.

Please do not be concerned we are here caring for our patients just as we have always been.

Mirena Coil: License extended from 5 years to 8 years for contraception

The Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health CEU statement notes that the Mirena® 52mg LNG-IUD has now been licensed for 8 years for contraception. There has not been an extension to the licensed duration of use when being used for the management of heavy menstrual bleeding, or for endometrial protection as part of hormone replacement therapy (this still requires a change at 5 years).

This applies to mirena coils only, not other types of contraception.

example: a mirena coil inserted in January 2020 can continue to provide contraception till January 2028.
